It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Yehuda (Yiddel) Dickstein z”l. He was 94 years old.

Rabbi Dickstein, a son of R’ Koppel Zalman Dickstein, was one of the last remaining Alter Mirrers, those who merited learning in the Mir Yeshiva of old. Reb Yiddel was part of a unique chaburah of bnei Torah at the Mir in Poland and later in Shanghai, when the yeshiva was transplanted there during World War II.

Reb Yehudah was one of the youngest talmidim at the Mir in Poland. He fled with the Mir to Lithuania until that country was threatened by Soviet invasion. It was in Lithuania that Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara risked his career and for travel visas for 6,000 Jews – including Reb Yehudah – to flee the country. With these documents in hand, the Mir group took the Trans-Siberian railroad through Russia, and after a stay in Japan, they ended up in Shanghai. It was not until Reb Yehudah arrived in America that he learned that the rest of his immediate family had perished in Europe.

Reb Yehudah lived for many years in Baltimore, where he was the rov of the Rogers Avenue Synagogue until 1965, when he became the rov of Cong. Chizuk Amuno. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta.

Reb Yehudah’s son, Ken (Heshy) Dickstein, was a police officer for many years in Baltimore.

Reb Yehuda’s son-in-law is Rabbi Binyomin Friedman, rov of Congregation Ariel in Dunwoody, Georgia.

Rabbi Dickstein passed away this past Sunday in Atlanta, Georgia.

The levaya was held on Sunday at Congregation Ariel in Dunwoody, Georgia, followed by kevurah at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta.

Reb Yehudah is survived by his children, Ken Dickstein, Reb Mendel Dickstein, Mrs. Dina Friedman and Mrs. Rivka Lipschutz.

The family is sitting shivah at the Friedman home, located at 2090 Westover Plantation in Dunwoody. Shacharis is at 7:45 a.m. Minchah/Maariv are at 6:50 p.m.

Yehi zichro boruch.
