Capitol HotelLakewood, NJ – A five-story apartment building will replace the historic, but now dilapidated Capitol Hotel in the heart of Lakewood, NJ.

Built in the 1930s and expanded in the 1960s, the Capitol Hotel was once a hub of activity, a choice destination for those visiting Lakewood. The hotel fell into disrepair in recent years.

The new building will boast 84 two-bedroom and 16 one-bedroom apartments, with 124 parking spaces on its ground floor.

The apartment building will be operated as a for-profit enterprise, not as a nonprofit venture, sources indicate.

The location, at the corner of Seventh Street and Madison Avenue, is just two blocks from Beth Medrash Govoha.

The various stores that used to be located in and around the Capitol – including Pizza Express, Ari’s Rent-a-Car, Capitol Seforim and Yismach Yisroel Ice Cream – have all vacated the premises ahead of the building’s demolition. Ari’s is now located at a motel at Madison and Fifth, Captiol Seforim moved to a storefront on Route 9 South in Howell, and Yismach Yisroel is now located at Lexington Avenue and Fourth Street.

The shul formerly located in the basement of the Capitol Hotel now meets at the Bais Horaah of Lakewood building at Madison Avenue and Fourth Street.

Once demolition and construction commences, the bus stop – utilized by Lake Charter, Rockshire and others – in front of the hotel will be relocated.
