Father After 30 Years: “We Will Continue to Be at the Hospital”

Matzav.com reported yesterday that after thirty years of marriage, Rabbi Yitzchok Meir Peretz and his wife, Sima, welcomed their first child, a daughter, born at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Yerushalayim.

Now, shortly after the big simcha was celebrated, Reb Yitzchok Meir proclaimed that he and his wife, residents of the Givat Shaul neighborhood of Yerushalayim, will continue their avodas hakodesh and chesed at Hadassah Ein Kerem, where for decades they have been providing food, drink and other items for patients each Shabbos.

Members of the various departments at the hospital were elated upon hearing news of the birth to the couple, both age 49.

Hadassah Director Zeev Rotstein met Reb Yitzchok Meir at the hospital after the birth and excitedly wished him mazel tov.

“Your acts of kindness for so many patients and their families over the years have not gone unnoticed,” Zeev commented. “You have chosen to implement in practice the vision of Hadassah, which is giving to and having compassion for all people.”

The rov of the medical center, Rabbi Moshe Klein, who knows the Peretzes well and works closely with Reb Yitzchok Meir every weekend, said that the joy over the birth is the biggest news out of the hospital. “There is no describing the happiness felt by everyone who has visited the hospital this week. Reb Yitzchok Meir, you represent the symbol and example of dedication and volunteerism. It is no coincidence that the birth took place the week when we read about the zechus of Avrohom and Sarah to excel in hachnosas orchim and chesed.”

Rabbi Klein asked Reb Yitzchok Meir if he can continue to visit on weekends and Yomim Tovim as he has done for 25 years, and he indeed agreed to “continue to engage in activities on behalf of everyone in the hospital.”

Why Did Rav Povarsky Insist On Being Menachem Avel the Rebbetzin?

Rav Berel Povarsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Ponovezh, insisted on being menachem avel Rebbetzin Zaks, wife of Rav Amram Zaks zt”l whose brother, Rav Nosson Tzvi Shulman zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Slabodka Yeshiva, passed away this week.

While the rest of the Shulman family is sitting shivah at Rav Nosson Tzvi’s home on Rechov Harav Kalish in Bnei Brak, Rebbetzin Zaks, because of her weakness, is sitting shivah at her home, located adjacent to the Slabodka Yeshiva on Rechov Harav Sher. Upon hearing that the Rebbetzin is sitting shivah alone, Rav Povarsky said that he wants to be menachem avel her.

Rav Povarsky explained: “During the shivah for the wife of Rav Isaac Sher zt”l, I entered the home of the Chazon Ish, and he asked me to accompany him to be menachem avel. I told him that the only person sitting shivah was Rav and Rebbetzin Sher’s daughter, Rebbetzin Chaya Miriam Shulman (wife of Rav Mordechai Shulman). He replied, ‘Rav Eizik had one son, Rav Yosef Sher (father-in-law of Rav Dov Landau), but he is no longer alive (as he didn’t survive the Holocaust). I wish to go be menachem her, the daughter of gedolim and an aishes chover.’

Concluded Rav Povarsky this week, “If the Chazon Ish felt it appropriate to be menachem avel her mother, I can go to be menachem avel her for her brother, because she too is the daughter of gedolim and an aishes chover.”

STORY OF IMPACT: UN Ambassador Votes for Israel After His Daughter Was Inspired By Company of Frum Employer, R’ Shlomo Werdyger

By Rabbi Dovid Saks

Jewish Heritage Connection

Scranton, PA

The following story was related at the Agudah Convention by Rabbi Paysach Krohn. The details have been verified by Matzav.com. The story is shared here as it was written up by the aforementioned Rabbi Saks of Scranton.

This past weekend, I heard an amazing story: Mr. Sol Werdiger, CEO of Outerstuff, a company that produces sports apparel, received a phone call from Mr. Oh Joon, the South Korean UN Ambassador, asking to meet him for lunch at a kosher restaurant in Manhattan.
Although Sol did not know the purpose of the meeting, he agreed to meet with Mr. Joon.

When they met, Mr. Joon told him the following: “I have always heard negative stereotypes about Jews and Israel and I took it at face value. Then, my daughter took an internship working on design in your company. Throughout the year, she has been telling me how wonderful it is to work at your company.”

Mr. Joon continued: “There are four areas which stood out and impressed my daughter.

“1) Every day, at 1:30 p.m., no matter what was going on at the office, all the men, including those from neighboring offices, retreated into a room to pray with sincerity and calm.

“2) Every Friday, the office shuts down early in the afternoon in preparation for your holy Sabbath and is closed on the Sabbath – this includes all workers, no matter which faith or religion they maintain.

“3) My daughter observed that each petitioner for charity – and there were many – were treated with respect and left with a check in hand.

“4) My daughter was treated with the utmost respect and dignity.”

oh-joonBecause of the amazing experience and lessons the company taught his daughter, Mr. Joon took out his checkbook and was ready to write out a check returning all his daughter’s earnings.

Mr. Werdiger wouldn’t hear of it.

“Your daughter worked and earned her salary and rightfully deserves her pay,” he said. “I will not accept any remuneration.”

Then the ambassador relayed the most amazing thing: “As you know, I have voting privileges at the UN. Because of my renewed appreciation of the Jewish people, I abstained from voting on resolutions against Israel on three occasions. At one resolution, I was the ninth vote needed to pass the motion and resolution against Israel, and because I abstained, it did not pass!”

Mr. Werdiger told me that no one at the office had any idea that this girl was the daughter of an ambassador, and no one ever imagined what type of impact their typical conduct at work had on her or how this impacted the votes against Israel.

G-d has entrusted us to follow the example of our forefather Avrohom to be trailblazers and to set examples, becoming a light unto all nations by living exemplary lives as outlined by the laws, personalities and experiences of our precious and timeless Torah.

Five Months Ago, Rav Kook Said “A Fire is Coming”

About five months ago, a group lobbied to have a pool open on Shabbos in the city of Tzefas. A lengthy struggle followed to stop the chillul Shabbos and have the pool closed.

At the time, Rav Dov Kook of Tiveriah was consulted. While visiting the kever of Nachum Ish Gamzu with some followers, Rav Kook addressed chillul Shabbos among some parts of the community and said that “a fire is coming.”

“Again, a fire is approaching. I don’t want to say more…. I must remain silent about this because I am forbidden from saying what I am seeing. But I see a fire, to say the least… I must remain quiet and not say more; from Shomayim I am not permitted to speak.

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rebbetzin Gita Cohen a”h. She was approximately 70 years old.

The Rebbetzin was a daughter of the famed Rav Leizer Platchinsky, a renowned Litvishe gaon. The Rebbetzin’s mother was a daughter of the Tzaddik of Yerushalayim, Rav Aryeh Levine zt”l.

The Rebbetzin was the wife of Rav Shaya Cohen, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Zichron Aryeh of Far Rockaway. She was an isha chashuvah, who in addition to supporting her husband’s harbotzas Torah was involved in numerous chesed activities and helped innumerable people. Her passing has plunged family and friends into mourning.

The levaya will be held at 1 p.m. at Yeshiva Zichron Aryeh, located at 1213 Bay 25th Street in Far Rockaway, NY.

She is survived by her husband, Rav Shaya; her brother, Rav Shlomo Platchinsky; and their children, six sons and two daughters, including Rabbi Yehudah Cohen, Rabbi Chezky Cohen, and Mrs. Pollack, wife of Rabbi Avi Pollack.

Yehi zichrah boruch.
