JP Updates reports that the NYPD is investigating a burglary that took place Thursday morning at a shul in Boro Park, Brooklyn, where thieves allegedly stole $10,000 from a safe.

The burglary took place at 4 a.m. at the Tosher Shul located at 4615 14th Avenue, where the three men were caught on video removing money from the safe.

Detectives are looking into the possibility that the safe may have been open, since they were in and out of the shul in seconds.

Watch: Flatbush Sefardic Kehillah Dances with Stolen Sifrei Torah that Were Returned

Last night, a Flatbush kehillah whose four Sifrei Torah were stolen on Simchas Torah morning danced with the Sifrei Torah, which were mysteriously returned early Friday morning.

As first reported on Matzav.com, the Sifrei Torah were stolen on Tuesday, Simchas Torah, at 1 a.m., just hours after they were used for Hakafos by the mispallelim of the Syrian/Sefardic shul, known as the Avenue O Synagogue or Ohel Yeshua V’Sarah and led by its rov, Rav Shmuel Beyda.

A man learning at the shul early Friday morning found the Sifrei Torah in bags outside the building as he exited the shul at about 1:30 a.m. Video surveillance posted previously on Matzav.com shows a man pulling an unmarked van up to the front of the shul Friday morning at about 1 a.m. and unloading the Sifrei Torah, which were in black garbage bags. After depositing them in front of the bet knesset, the man drove off.

The Sifrei Torah are valued at about $240,000.

“Thanks to the coordinated community efforts working in tandem with the NYPD and Flatbush Shomrim, it seems that the enormous pressure has thank G-d forced the late night return of the Torahs,” stated Josh Mehlman, Chairman of the FJCC.

While the Sefardic-style Sifrei Torah have been found, the thief, a white man in his 20s who may or may not be Jewish but was wearing a yarmulka during the burglary, remains at large.

Councilman David G. Greenfield hailed the work of the NYPD and community members after the safe return of the Sifrei Torah.

Greenfield says that a monetary reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of the burglar, along with the release of surveillance camera images of the criminal, may have contributed to the pressure the thief felt to return the Sifrei Torah. “I am thrilled that these Torah scrolls, stolen by a shameful coward in the dead of night on Simchat Torah, were returned last night,” Greenfield said.

“I want to thank the officers of the 66th Precinct, the Major Case Squad, Brooklyn South Chief Powers and all those in the NYPD and volunteers who worked so tirelessly to achieve the return of these Torah scrolls,” Greenfield said. “I look forward to continuing to work with them as they seek out the person who committed this crime.”

Greenfield is offering an award of $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the capture and conviction of the criminal who committed this crime, while the FJCC announced a $10,000 reward to help find the thief.

Anyone with information that could help in solving this crime is encouraged to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers tip line at 1.800.577.TIPS. The NYPD’s 66th Precinct and Major Case Squad are actively investigating.

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing on Shabbos of Rabbi David Halpern z”l. He was 87 years old.

Rabbi Halpern was the founding rov of Flatbush Park Jewish Center, where he served for some six decades, starting in 1952, at age 23, shortly after he received semichah at Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon in New York City.

The minyan began on Avenue N in Flatbush, where Rabbi Halpern fought to keep his shul Orthodox, despite pressures from some quarters to turn it into a Conservative temple. The shul later resettled on Avenue U, between 63rd and 64th Streets.

Rabbi Halpern is credited for guiding generations of mispallelim in their Judaism, bring them close to mitzvah observance and advising them in halacha and hashkafa.

Rabbi Halpern retired in 2012 and was replaced by Rabbi Yisroel Perelson.

Rabbi Halpern lived a colorful life, which included stints in the New York National Guard for several summers. He was a member of the New York Board of Rabbis.

The levayah is being held now at the Flatbush Park Jewish Center. Kevurah will take place at Beth David Cemetery on Elmont Road in Elmont, NY.

Rabbi Halpern is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sheila Halpern, their three children, and grandchildren.

A special bais din appointed new members to the board of trustees that is officially in charge of the ancient Keter Aram Tzuva Torah scroll presumably used by the Rambam when he wrote hilchos Sefer Torah in Yad Hachazokah. Most of the former members have passed away.

Headed by Professor Ayal Jino of the Ben Tzvi Institute, the new board includes Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Hebrew University President Professor Menachem Ben-Sasson, Rav Yaakov Yedid, a leader of the Aleppo community in Brooklyn, and Rav Avraham Dayan of the Aleppo community in Sao Paolo.

Syria’s Aleppo community guarded the sefer for centuries before it was smuggled to Israel in 1958, by which time major parts of it were lost.

A MESSAGE FROM SHOLOM RUBASHKIN’S DAUGHTER:
It’s the end of Tishrei and the weather is stunning. Perfect weather for a family day. my most precious childhood memories are family trips together. Nowhere too fancy or extravagant. the local dairy farm, park Mississippi River were favorites. The excitement was being together. Now that it’s nonexistent it has become even more precious. Especially yesterday, on our father, Sholom Mordecai halevi ben Rivka’s birthday – 28 Tishrei.
Well, I guess it’s not totally nonexistent. about a month ago we did have a family trip together. Except never in my wildest dreams would I think of such a destination. Instead of going with my father we went to my father in Otisville medium security prison. It was family day. A day when all your children are permitted to visit. I was quite emotional driving there as childhood memories and thoughts raced through my mind and I thought of my younger siblings robbed of their childhood. We had problems getting in to the visiting room and once we were finally in it was a long delay until my father was let in. Watching all the other wives and children spending time together and thinking of the challenges they are going through was quite sad. It was then that Hashem put an idea in my mind. We quickly had all the children make “signs” on copy paper welcoming my father. We stood by the door and held him up every time it would open. Just like you would see in the airport. My father finally did come through that door. Tears flowed from his eyes as he laughed and hugged each kid. All I could think of was imagine when he really walks through those Prison gates.
Just then he voice my thoughts. “This is just a small taste of what will be!” His bitachon so strong you’d think he’s coming home with us.
Yesterday, Chof Ches Tishrei, was my father’s birthday. Seven years ago we “celebrated” his 50th during that dreaded trial. On a birthday one’s mazal is gover. Please do all you can today to reunite our family! Please do all you can to make that dream come true.
Please make a hachlata (positive resolution) in his merit and share it with mailforsholom@gmail.com
Please say his capital today (and every day) – Kappitel 58:

Photos: Tashbar of Lakewood Moves into Stunning New Campus

Drivers cruising down Oak Street just east of Route 9 in Lakewood, NJ, may have noticed the stunning new Tashbar campus.

The state-of-the-art Tashbar campus represents the fulfillment of Tashbar’s unique chinuch vision, building on Tashbar’s successful 25-year track record. In true Tashbar tradition, the leading-edge strategic design and features of the 94,000-square-foot yeshiva building, once again, raise the bar and set the tone for utilizing every possible resource to optimize the learning experience for each and every child.

It’s hard to believe that just over a year ago, Tashbar parents, grandparents and friends, as well as Lakewood’s roshei yeshiva and many rabbonim, stood at the vacant site laying the even hapinah. Indeed, it is truly remarkable how quickly the construction moved along. In a block-constructed school building, plumbing, electricity and ventilation must all be done simultaneously with the structure. This requires meticulous planning and careful coordination of all the involved structural disciplines, vendors and subcontractors. The fact that the building progressed so quickly, be’ezras Hashem, is a tribute to the meticulous planning and implementation of the project.

With a price tag of $15 million, virtually every facet of the campus was thoughtfully designed to serve as a physical, bricks-and-mortar vessel that will facilitate the uncompromising excellence and cutting-edge resources of the Tashbar chinuch model. It is the fulfillment of a vision conceived, cultivated and nurtured over the past 25 years under the tutelage of Tashbar’s founder and dean, Rabbi Meir Hertz. Tashbar’s pioneering approach to chinuch recognizes the individuality and the unique strengths of each talmid, providing whatever resources are needed to enhance, enrich and realize those strengths to their fullest potential.

The building’s 94,000-square-foot interior houses 27 bright and airy classrooms and the very latest resources and amenities. The building also contains a beautifully appointed bais medrash, a spacious dining hall/cafetorium, and an 11,000-square-foot gym. With additional properly-equipped self-contained classrooms, resource and enrichment rooms, Tashbar’s commitment to maximizing the potential of every student has been taken to new, unprecedented heights.

For further information regarding dedication opportunities and sponsorships, contact Rabbi Chaim Hertz at 732.905.1111, ext. 141, or email cahertz@tashbar.org.
